Soft Landing For Expats

Feeling at home in Amsterdam

We help expats make Amsterdam their home

Starting a life in a new country can be difficult, let us guide you

This program is designed to help expats

Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience, especially if you don't know anyone or the local culture. This is why Soft Landing is here to help expats feel at home in Amsterdam. Our mission is to support highly skilled migrant workers in getting to know the city, the culture, and themselves in a different area.

We support integration

Expats come to Amsterdam not only to work, but also to live. To move to a new country, to an amazing city like Amsterdam is very exciting, but many travellers will come to find that it is not always easy to adjust in another culture. Research shows that integration and socialization are the key to stress reduction and job performance. Dealing with language and cultural barriers, loneliness and home sickness is hard, having a limited network and especially missing a social safety net can lead to more psychological issues down the road. There are therapists specialising in treating expats suffering from depression and anxiety, which are diagnoses even more prevalent in expats than in locals. We, however, believe that joining a program designed to assist expats in their experience moving abroad, will help avoid these problems in the first place and create a pleasant experience.

The program

Our team provides the option to either start individual support sessions or join a group consisting of expats based in Amsterdam. Both the individual program and the group program have a duration of 6 weeks. At the moment we do not have a waiting list, get in touch and we can discuss your options and wishes, and if a group or individual sessions is more suited for you.

Key topics in both programs are: understanding and openness about cultural differences, reaching personal goals and integration in Dutch society.

Individual

The individual support program helps you with your particular goals, keeping in mind the typical themes new expats encounter, and where you are at in your process of integration. There is time for practical coaching and processing the emotions that you are experiencing during this proces, to help you cope and feel supported in your journey.

The group support program helps you trough guided discussions, individual goals and adds the shared social experience of the group itself. Depending on the group dynamics, topics can be: practical difficulties in Amsterdam because of language and bureaucratic barriers, social engagement with other expats and the Dutch, cultural differences, home sickness, connecting to a new country, discrimination and dealing with Dutch “rudeness”. Groups are a great way to start working on your personal goals and to give and receive support.

Who we are

Our team of qualified psychologists have both the ability to process the emotions coming up for expats in their journey to create a home away from their known environment, and the experience with expat-related themes or their own experience abroad. We combine our psychological understanding of behavior, feelings and human interaction with practical coaching skills. We believe that expats are welcome in Amsterdam, and are sensitive to cultural differences. Inclusivity is important to us, all genders, sexualities, political or cultural backgrounds are welcome. We aim to diminish the division between locals and expats, by looking directly into ways for integration into Dutch society.

Testimonials

"The program provided me with valuable assistance in identifying areas of my life in the Netherlands and in Amsterdam that needed improvement, and equipped me with the necessary tools to address them. When you move to a new country, you often arrive with plans, ideas, and expectations about how things will be. However, at some point during the process, it's common to feel lost and overwhelmed. Everything is new, and tasks that were once trivial in your hometown now require a significant amount of energy and effort. Gradually, you begin to lose sight of your initial intentions.

I must express my gratitude to Soft Landing for helping me rediscover my pre-move plans and motivating me to take action on them. Their guidance played a crucial role in helping me find my place in this wonderful city.

Regarding the program itself, I thoroughly enjoyed the weekly assignments, as each one felt like a building block in constructing a sense of home in the Netherlands, from the most trivial culture differences to start creating meaningful relationships with people.

Working with Eline was a pleasure, as she not only supported me throughout the process but also challenged some of my existing mental models, providing guidance every step of the way.

Additionally, one recurring issue for me was the concept of home—what it truly meant and how to achieve it. I am incredibly thankful to Soft Landing for helping me unravel this complex matter. It meant the world to me.

To anyone seeking guidance in navigating a relocation, especially in the Netherlands, I highly recommend this program. It will undoubtedly provide you with invaluable assistance.

Once again thank you!"

"As someone highly adaptive that lived in multiple countries before moving to NL, I was reluctant to make this kind of investment, but I am so glad I did. The value I got from working with Soft Landing is priceless.

I truly appreciated Eline's holistic approach, addressing not only the psychological aspects but also taking into consideration the practical aspects of relocating abroad. Her recommendations on building a support network, accessing local resources, and embracing new experiences were immensely helpful in making a smooth transition.

Furthermore, her professionalism and dedication were evident in the level of personal attention and care she provided. She consistently went above and beyond to ensure that our sessions were productive and tailored to my specific needs. Her responsiveness and availability for support, even outside of scheduled sessions, demonstrateda genuine commitment to my well-being and successful adaptation.

Thanks to her expertise and guidance, I now feel empowered and confident in my ability to navigate the challenges and embrace the opportunities presented by this international relocation.

I recommend her services to anyone seeking professional support during the process of moving to NL."
